Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Naturally Better For SEO

Posted by

In response to a thread on Reddit, Google Browse Supporter John Mueller states there’s no fundamental SEO advantage to using WordPress compared to coding a website yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO online forum asks a familiar question lots of specialists encounter in their careers.

Is WordPress better for SEO than coding your own site?

Other variations of that question include, “is WordPress better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the response is always the exact same.

WordPress isn’t inherently better for SEO than any other choice. It is among many ways to construct a website that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In reaction to whether utilizing WordPress is much better for SEO than coding your own website, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, but you can focus more on the content if you don’t invest all your time creating a brand-new CMS on your own. (some individuals choose making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most substantial advantage WordPress offers is the ease of use compared to by hand composing code.

However, that’s only helpful to the website owner. It makes no difference to Google if a website is constructed with WordPress.

This concern shows up regularly and deserves revisiting due to the misinformation circulating around WordPress and SEO.

For example, take the second-most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread directly underneath Mueller’s.

A private claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress websites more effectively than other CMSs.

That’s false, though the misconception of WordPress being much better for SEO continues to persist.
